EAST SETAUKET, N.Y., June 14, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The initial phase of construction of the new Republic Airways headquarters and training facility in Carmel, Indiana (USA), was completed in April 2023. The project architects specified PENETRON ADMIX SB, a crystalline waterproofing admixture, to secure the below-grade concrete structures against the region’s groundwater levels.

One of the largest regional airlines in the USA, Republic Airways operates services for American Eagle, Delta Connection, and United Express. With 6,000 employees located across 12 crew and maintenance bases, the company maintains a fleet of 220 Embraer 170/175 regional jets. It offers scheduled passenger service with nearly 1,000 daily flights to 100 cities across the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, and Central America.

Designed by RATIO Architects, the new $200 million Republic Airways campus is situated in Carmel, Indiana, just north of Indianapolis, the state capitol. The airline’s call sign “Brickyard” is derived from the nickname of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“Creating a new company headquarters that unifies the disparate corporate offices in Indianapolis in a single location in Carmel will provide an additional economic boost to an already growing community,” adds Christopher Chen, Director of The Penetron Group. “The modern architectural style of the airline’s new corporate headquarters also reflects the technical nature of the campus.”

The construction project comprised the company’s 142,000 ft2 corporate headquarters, which features outdoor courtyards, rooftop terraces, recreational spaces and other gathering places that will provide places for employees and visitors to meet. The 105,000 ft2 high-tech training facility is housed in a three-floor building, with 20 classrooms, 94 workstations, two cabin trainers and 10 simulator training bays used to train pilots, technicians, flight attendants and other positions within the airline. The project also included the expansion of the adjacent Hampton Hotel to 272 rooms (from 109 rooms) to accommodate trainees, visiting instructors, business partners and colleagues traveling to the aviation campus, an 800-space parking garage featuring shops and restaurants on the ground floor, and 94 multifamily residential units on the upper floors.

Due to the groundwater levels typical for the central Indiana area, RATIO Architects required a reliable solution to protect the below-grade concrete and steel-reinforced structures – including the basement areas and the parking garage – from the hydrostatic pressure and resulting water intrusion. After consulting with imi, the project’s ready-mix supplier, PENETRON ADMIX SB was specified to provide a durable and waterproof mix design.

Added to the concrete mix during the batching phase, the PENETRON ADMIX SB pre-measured soluble bags dissolve quickly and completely for accurate (and easy) dosage for any project. The self-healing capability of PENETRON ADMIX SB-treated concrete will also self-heal all hairline cracks that form throughout the service life of the concrete, reducing the amount of maintenance required.

The PENETRON ADMIX SB-treated concrete for the Republic Airways project was used to waterproof and protect the foundation slabs and below-grade retaining walls of the corporate headquarters and the training facility, and for the foundation slab of the parking garage.

“Specifying an integral waterproofing solution for the below-grade structures in lieu of traditional surface-applied waterproofing systems helped the contractor avoid an additional step of having trade specialists on site to install a more costly and time-consuming surface-applied waterproofing solution,” says Christopher Chen. “The Penetron solution will prove to be not only the most durable, but also the most cost- and time-effective.”
